How Sports Betting Works

A plain-English introduction to sports betting: what a sportsbook is, how odds and payouts work, and why the house has an edge.

Sports betting is simply putting money on the outcome of a game or event. If your prediction is right, you win a payout; if it's wrong, you lose your stake. What separates winning bettors from losing ones isn't luck on any single game - it's understanding the numbers behind the bets.

What a sportsbook actually does

A sportsbook (or "book") sets prices - called odds - on the possible outcomes of an event and takes bets on each side. The book's goal isn't to predict games perfectly; it's to set prices that attract balanced action and bake in a small margin, called the vig, on every market. That margin is how books profit over time regardless of who wins.

Because of the vig, the odds you see always imply a total probability greater than 100%. Beating a sportsbook long-term means finding prices that are better than the true probability of the outcome - the entire focus of Expected Value (+EV) and our No-Vig Fair Odds Calculator.

The three things every bet has

  • The selection - what you're betting on (a team to win, a total to go over, etc.).
  • The odds - the price, which determines your payout and implies a probability.
  • The stake - how much you risk.

A simple example

Say the Yankees are −150 to beat the Red Sox. The minus sign means they're favored. At −150, you'd risk $150 to win $100 (plus your stake back). If you bet $150 and the Yankees win, you collect $250 total ($150 stake + $100 profit). If they lose, you're out $150.

Why most bettors lose

The average bettor loses not because they pick badly, but because they pay full retail vig on every bet and never shop for reduced-juice prices. The good news: the skills that flip that math - anchoring at a low-juice sportsbook, line shopping, understanding value, and bankroll discipline - are all learnable, and they're what the rest of this school covers.

Bottom line: a sportsbook is a marketplace with a built-in margin. Your job as a bettor is to find spots where the price is better than the real odds - and to bet the right amount when you do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be good at predicting games to win?

Not exactly. Long-term winners focus on getting prices that are better than the true probability of an outcome (positive expected value), not on picking a high percentage of games. Value matters more than win rate.

How does a sportsbook make money?

It builds a small margin called the vig (or juice) into every price. Across thousands of bets, that margin is the book's profit, which is why the combined odds on a game always add up to more than 100%.
