How Prediction Market Prices Work (and What They Really Cost)

How cents-based contract prices map to American betting odds, how to strip out hidden bid-ask spreads and taker fees, and how to read exchange prices accurately.

A prediction market doesn't display standard American odds like `-110` or `+150`. Instead, it quotes binary contracts priced between 1¢ and 99¢ that pay $1.00 if the event happens and $0.00 if it doesn't. To evaluate whether a prediction-market price is actually fair—or a disguised trap—you first need to translate cents into real betting odds.

Converting cents to American betting odds

Because a $1.00 contract's price in cents equals its raw implied probability, you can convert any contract price into standard odds using our Odds Converter:

  • Price in cents ÷ 100 = raw implied probability. A 60¢ contract implies a 60% win probability.
  • Decimal odds = 100 ÷ price in cents. 60¢ → 100 ÷ 60 = 1.67 decimal.
  • American odds equivalent: 60¢ equals −150; 40¢ equals +150; 52.4¢ equals −110.

The hidden vig: Bid-Ask spreads and taker fees

Marketing materials for prediction markets often claim they have 'zero bookmaker vig.' In practice, retail bettors frequently pay *more* hidden juice on an exchange than they would on a reduced-juice sportsbook board:

  • The Bid-Ask Gap: If the best bid on YES is 51¢ and the best ask is 55¢, the effective two-way market is `-122 / -104`—a steeper overround than a standard `-110 / -110` sportsbook line, and far worse than YouWager.lv's Friday 5% Football Juice Special (`-105 / -105`) or MLB True 10-Cent Dime Line. You can verify this immediately in our Hold & Vig Calculator.
  • Exchange Taker & Settlement Fees: Most regulated exchanges charge per-contract transaction or profit fees when you cross the spread, quietly eroding your net payout.
  • Missing Point Spreads & Key Numbers: Prediction markets primarily trade moneyline (winner) contracts. In football and basketball, where key numbers like 3 and 7 or alternate totals create the highest-value edges, a binary winner contract leaves you with far fewer ways to attack a matchup.
Never take a prediction market's 'no vig' claim at face value. Convert both sides of the order book into American odds using our No-Vig Fair Odds Calculator and compare the true hold against the Live Odds Board.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do prediction market prices convert to American betting odds?

The contract price in cents is the implied win percentage (e.g., 60¢ = 60% = -150 American; 40¢ = 40% = +150 American). You can plug any probability directly into our Odds Converter.

Are prediction markets really vig-free?

Rarely for the average bettor. Between the gap between the bid and ask price on the order book and exchange taker/settlement fees, crossing the spread on a prediction market often costs more than betting a tight, low-vig sportsbook line.

Why do football and basketball bettors prefer point spreads over binary contracts?

Because point spreads and game totals allow you to capture key numbers (+3, +7) and isolate pace or weather edges (such as outdoor wind under totals) that a simple YES/NO moneyline contract cannot express.
