De-Vig Methods (Multiplicative, Additive & Power)
The main ways to remove the vig from a market, how they differ on favorites and longshots, and which to use when.
De-vigging turns a market's raw prices into fair, no-vig probabilities. There's more than one way to do it, and the method you choose subtly changes the fair line - especially on lopsided markets. Here are the main approaches.
Multiplicative (proportional)
The most common method. Convert each side to implied probability, add them up, and divide each by the total so they sum to 100%. It's simple, fast, and good enough for most bets. Its weakness: it assumes the vig is spread proportionally, which can slightly misprice heavy favorites and longshots.
Additive
Instead of dividing proportionally, additive de-vig subtracts an equal share of the overround from each side. It distributes the vig evenly rather than proportionally, which changes the fair price on lopsided markets relative to the multiplicative method.
Power / Shin methods
More advanced methods (the power method and Shin's method) model the idea that the vig isn't spread evenly - that longshots carry more margin than favorites (the "favorite-longshot bias"). They solve for an exponent or an insider-money factor to better estimate true probabilities on skewed markets. They're more accurate on extreme prices but more complex to compute.
Which should you use?
- Multiplicative - the default for everyday value betting; accurate enough on balanced markets.
- Additive - an alternative view worth comparing on lopsided lines.
- Power/Shin - for bettors who want the most accurate fair price on heavy favorites and longshots.
Our tools use a proportional de-vig on two-way markets, which is the standard, transparent approach for moneylines, spreads, and totals. If you value-bet longshots heavily, it's worth understanding how the fancier methods would shift your fair line.
