Key Numbers & Half-Point Valuation in Football
Why 3 and 7 dominate NFL margins, how to calculate the true value of buying half-points, and the mechanics of sharp Wong teasers.
In point spread sports, not all half-points are created equal. Because football scores are built from 3-point field goals and 7-point touchdowns (with PATs), games do not land on random numbers. Final score margins cluster tightly around specific key numbers.
The hierarchy of NFL key numbers
Over modern NFL history, games land on the following margins of victory with predictable frequency:
| Margin of Victory | Historical Frequency | Importance Tier |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Points | ~15.2% of all games | Primary Key (Highest value in sports betting) |
| 7 Points | ~9.4% of all games | Primary Key (Second highest value) |
| 6 Points | ~6.1% of all games | Secondary Key (Touchdown without PAT) |
| 10 Points | ~5.8% of all games | Secondary Key (Touchdown + Field Goal) |
| 4 Points | ~5.4% of all games | Secondary Key (Field goal + 1 point) |
| 14 Points | ~4.9% of all games | Tertiary Key (Two converted touchdowns) |
The half-point buying trap
Sportsbooks allow bettors to buy half-points for an extra 10 to 15 cents of juice (e.g. paying -125 instead of -110 to move a line). Buying half-points off dead numbers is one of the easiest ways to burn bankroll:
- Dead number trap: Moving from +4.5 to +5.0 costs you 10 cents of vig, but NFL games land on 5 only about 2.5% of the time. The mathematical value of that half-point is worth only ~3 cents. You are paying a huge premium for a near-useless buffer.
- Crossing the 3: Moving from +2.5 to +3.5 crosses the 3 entirely. That single full point is worth roughly 25 to 30 cents in true probability. When a soft book leaves an underdog at +3 (-110) while sharp books move to +2.5, capturing that +3 is the heart of closing line value.
The sharp teaser sweet spot (Wong Teasers)
A basic strategy teaser (frequently called a Wong teaser) takes advantage of key numbers by using a 6-point teaser to cross both 3 and 7:
- Teasing underdogs from +1.5, +2.0, or +2.5 up to +7.5, +8.0, or +8.5: You capture the key numbers 3, 4, 6, and 7 on the underdog side.
- Teasing favorites from -7.5, -8.0, or -8.5 down to -1.5, -2.0, or -2.5: You cross both 7 and 3, needing the favorite only to win the game outright by a field goal.
- Total threshold rule: Only tease games with low game totals (under 43.5). In low-scoring games, points are worth more, maximizing the mathematical edge of the 6-point shift.
