Positive EV Betting
How +EV betting works, how to find value bets using a de-vigged fair line, and how to size and track them for long-term profit.
Positive EV betting is the disciplined pursuit of bets priced better than their true probability. It's the strategy that underpins virtually every professional sports bettor and, unlike systems built on hunches, it's mathematically guaranteed to profit over a large enough sample.
The core loop
- Estimate the true probability of an outcome using a de-vigged fair line from the sharpest market.
- Scan every book for a price that pays more than that fair probability implies.
- When a book's price beats fair, the bet is +EV - measure the edge as EV%.
- Size the bet with a fraction of Kelly and log it.
- Judge yourself on closing line value, not on individual results.
Where the edge comes from
Retail books can't price every market as sharply as the market-making books. When a soft book lags the sharp consensus - on a prop, an alternate line, or after news - its price is briefly better than fair. +EV betting is the practice of systematically catching those gaps before they close.
Reading an EV%
An EV of +3% means that, on average, you'd net $3 for every $100 staked at that price. Small percentages compound: a bettor grinding hundreds of +2-4% bets a month with proper staking can build a serious edge, even though roughly half of those bets lose.
The realities
- Variance is brutal. You'll have losing weeks with a real edge. Only volume and time reveal it.
- Lines move. +EV prices vanish quickly - you need to act fast and shop.
- Books limit winners. Sustained +EV betting at soft books often leads to reduced limits (see Account Management).
- Data quality matters. Your edge is only as good as the fair line you measure against.
Our No-Vig Fair Odds Calculator and Kelly Criterion Calculator automate the math: de-vig the consensus market into a true fair probability, verify your price is +EV, and calculate the optimal fractional Kelly stake. Pair them with our Line Moves Monitor to confirm you are beating the closing number.
